Born in Chicago in 1910, Dr. Gillett received his medical degree in 1933 from the Marquette University School of Medicine in Milwaukee. He started a surgical practice in Racine in 1936, and married Alyce Herbert from Milwaukee in 1937. Returning to Racine from serving in the naval medical corps in the Pacific, Dr. Gillett opened a medical practice that became the Racine Medical Clinic in 1952. The Gilletts raised two children in their lakeshore home. Alyce died in 1981, and George remarried several years later, dying in 1990.
Built along the Lake Michigan shore just north of Racine, this large, angled-plan home (now ~5,000 square feet as currently modified) is said by Dr. Gillett to have been one of Kaeser's favorites, likely due to evidence in the client file of a positive interaction between architect and client, the freedom to place the house in the right orientation to the lake so that most rooms enjoy lake views, and a house budget providing the ability to design and execute many details such as large glass windows inset into limestone pillars and walls.
In the 1990s, Racine architect A. J. Seitz enclosed the former screen porch. The current owners recently worked with architect Ken Dahlin to relocate and enlarge the kitchen, expand the adjoining garage and work/storage areas by removing interior walls and slightly increasing the building envelope of board and batten redwood siding. The stone and glass entry foyer with stairs to the basement, portions of the bedroom wing, massive living room fireplace wall, hipped living room ceiling, remain as Kaeser designed them.
